Seventh Edition 2019-2020
Al Borde is a way of life that begun suddenly, without any expectations, in May 2007. Its headquarters are at 2800 m.a.s.l. in Quito-Ecuador. The responsibles behind this idea are Pascual Gangotena (1970), David Barragán (1981), Marialuisa Borja (1984) and Esteban Benavides (1985). Al Borde begins architectural practice from its multiple complexities and finds the gaps in the system to operate. They mix it up without any embarrassment, resilient by nature and reluctant to dogmas. Their approach has been developed through a daily hands-on work. They are far off from theoretical anxieties and highly attached to local realities. Their projects are always seeking to incorporate a high component of social innovation and improve local development. Al Borde received numerous awards, in 2012 the Schelling Architekturpreis and the Medalla al Reconocimiento Cultural del Ecuador. Their office was nominated for the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture (2013), the Iakov Chernikov International Prize (2014) and the Design of the Year Award (2015). In 2016 they were called to advise on the Mies Crown hall Americas Prize and they were official participants to the 15th Venice Biennale Architettura.
