Fourth Edition 2013-2014
Established in 1996 by Jonathan Sergison (1964) and Stephen Bates (1964), the practice earned a reputation as one of the UK’s leading architectural offices, international in outlook and staff composition and having numerous collaborative projects with international partners. In September 2010 a second office was established in central Zurich in response to the growing number of international commissions. All projects are informed by a sensitive approach to place, the experiential potential of materials and construction and a concern for the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability.
The practice is committed to a research-based approach, which is supported by the partners’ academic work and aspires to create an architecture that is contemporary and rooted in its context, at all scales. Sergison Bates have published extensively and curated several exhibitions. In addition to numerous awards for their buildings, they have won international recognition for their work with the Erich Schelling Medal for Architecture and the Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal for Architecture and participated in the 2008 and 2012 Venice Biennale.
