Since its founding in 1998, johnstonmarklee’s portfolio is distinguished by a conceptual approach to each project. Rather than design a signature style, johnstonmarklee investigates issues of form and technology to create unique works of architecture. Principals Sharon Johnston (1965) and Mark Lee (1967) have honed their approach to distill the inherent complexity of each project into coherent works varying in scale from master plans to contemporary buildings to temporary installations.

While maintaining a deep commitment to architectural history as well as ongoing discourse, johnstonmarklee’s creative process integrates the knowledge and influence of collaborators beyond those typical to architecture, engaging the expertise of contemporary artists, graphic designers, writers, and photographers including Ai Wei Wei, Walead Beshty, Jeff Elrod, Livia Corona, Luisa Lambri, Takeshi Murakami, Jack Pierson, Sterling Ruby, and James Welling. Both Lee and Johnston have held faculty positions at the University of California, Los Angeles and have lectured and exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Mark Lee held a guest professorship at the Berlin Technical University from 2009-2011. The pair taught at Rice University as the Cullinan Visiting Professors during spring 2013 and led an advanced option studio at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Fall 2013.
