Fourth Edition 2013-2014
Saija Hollmén (1970), Jenni Reuter (1972) and Helena Sandman (1972) started their collaboration in 1995. They work in Finland as well as in several African countries. They have been honoured with both national and international awards and their work has been published and exhibited widely. Aside from working as visiting critics and lecturers all over the world, the architects also teach at the Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland.
In 2007, Saija Hollmén, Jenni Reuter and Helena Sandman founded an NGO called Ukumbi. The mission of Ukumbi is to offer architectural planning and design for underprivileged groups. Often such groups include women, children or young people whose opportunities for participation in society are limited. Participatory planning empowers its target groups to influence the development of their own environment. Hollmén Reuter Sandman as part of Ukumbi is currently working on a learning centre for the garbage collectors of Cairo, Egypt and a shelter home for victims of domestic violence in Moshi, Tanzania.
In addition to cultural sustainability, Hollmén Reuter Sandman also seeks to create ecologically sustainable architecture. The use of renewable energy sources, recycling, the utilisation of local materials and local skills are among the pillars of their planning philosophy.
