A Tokyo native and University of California, Berkeley and Tokyo Art University graduate, Suzuko Yamada (1984) set up her independent studio in 2013 in Tokyo, having previously worked at the practice Sou Fujimoto Architects. She now teaches in an architecture studio at Kyoto University and Tokyo University of Science. In her practice, she explores a distinctly experimental architecture having received a number of awards along the way. Recent work includes a number of residential projects with designs that push the boundaries of domestic architecture. A first-class licensed architect in Japan, Suzuko Yamada has received the following Awards and Recognitions (a selection): SD Review 2011; “Arts&Life: Where will we live tomorrow?” 1st prize, 2011; 2020 Award of Architectural Design Association of Japan, 1st Prize; Yoshoka Prize, 2020; 2020 Under 35 Architects exhibition 2020, Gold Medal; Dezeen Awards 2020, recommendation; 2021 AR emerging architecture, shortlist; 2022 Selected Architectural Designs of the Architectural Institute of Japan; Kojima Award 2023.
