Spain

María González (1975) and Juanjo López de la Cruz (1974), after graduating from ETSA-Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Sevilla, established SOL89 in 2004, a practice in which they strive to accommodate research, teaching and professional practice. Over the years, SOL89 has built projects on different scales related to public programmes and the regeneration of the city and the landscape. This work has received several awards, such as the Fassa Bortolo Silver Medal, Wienerberger first prize, Fritz-Höger Silver Medal, European Grand Prix Philippe Rotthier and 40under40 Prize, from Italy, Austria, Germany, Belgium and USA respectively; and the X Enor Young Architecture first prize, FAD Opinion Award, National Brick Hispalyt first prize and first prize of the Council of Architects’ Associations in Spain. They were nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2015 and 2024 and chosen to represent Spain in the 15th Biennale di Venezia, being winners of the Golden Lion. They are professors at the ETSA Sevilla and have been Visiting Professors at some Universities as the Notre Dame of Beirut, Polytechnic University of Bratislava, Kingston University of London, Pontifical Catholic University of Santiago de Chile, Hochschule Luzern Technik & Architektur and Texas Tech University Center. Their professional and academic career also spans the field of architectural thought with contributions to specialised publications and as the curators of the current 16th Spanish Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.
