Based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Robust Architecture Workshop (RAW) was founded by Ganga Ratnayake (1974) and Milinda Pathiraja (1974) in 2011. Ganga earned her Master of Science in Architecture at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, before spending six years (2004-2010) as a graduate architect in Melbourne. Milinda completed a BArch (2001) and a PhD by design (2010) at the University of Melbourne, where he won the President’s Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis from the Royal Institute of British Architects (2011), the CIOB Australasia Excellent Building Postgraduate Research Award (2011), and the University of Melbourne Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence (2012).

RAW’s work has been published and exhibited widely, including in the 15th Venice architecture biennale in 2016. In the same year, they received the France-based Terra Award for Earthen Constructions, a recognition preceded by the Global LafargeHolcim Silver Award in 2015 and the LafargeHolcim regional Bronze prize for Asia Pacific in 2014. They also won the LafargeHolcim Building Better Recognition Price for Asia Pacific in 2017 and the Australian Institute of Architects Internional Chapter Award for Residential Architecture in 2018.
