Sebastián Irarrazával was born in Chile in 1967. He was trained as an architect at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Architectural Association in London. In 1993 he set up his own practice in Santiago. In 1999 he received the AOA (Architecture Offices Association) Award for the most outstanding young architect and was also a prize-winner at the Architecture Biennial in Chile. Irarrazával has taught at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile since 1994 and taught as visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston (2007) and the Università IUAV in Venice (2016). His projects have been published worldwide in specialised magazines, among them: Casabella, Arquitectura Viva, ARQ, and A+U. The work of his practice has been exhibited locally and abroad. Recent exhibitions include the XV Chilean Architectural Biennale, Venice Biennale, Shenzhen and Hong Kong bi-city Biennale, where he received the public choice award and the Milan Triennale, where he exhibited an ideal city for Africa. Irarrazával has been a prize-winner twice at the WAVE International Workshop held at the Università IUAV in Venice in 2014 and 2015. His projects include: The Modular School in Retiro, The Caterpillar House, The School of Design of the Universidad Católica and the Matta Cultural Centre of the Chilean Embassy in Argentina. This year his recent project Public Library of Constitución was a prize-winner at the Wood Design and Building Award and is currently being nominated for the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP 2016).
