Born in Beijing in 1963, he graduated in 1984 from the Tsinghua University in Beijing, obtaining the PhD at the School of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. His project for the School-Bridge in Fujian province received in 2009 the AR – Emerging Architecture Award and in 2010 the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. In 2012 Xiaodong Li was distinguished with the Honorary Fellowship of AIA (American Institute of Architects). His Primary School in Yuhu received the UNESCO Jury Award for Innovation, the EDRA/Places annual design Awards (Environmental Design Research Association), and the AR+D Awards in UK, as well as the ARASIA Gold Medal (Singapore) and the Business Week/Architectural Records China Awards Best Public Building.

Xiadong Li is professor and researcher in architectural design at the Tsinghua University. He realized several publications, in Chinese and English, on the theory and history of architecture and urban planning.
