Born in 1959, he studied at the School of Architecture, Ahmedabad (India) and at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he received a Masters of Architecture degree in Urban Design. In 1990 he founded the firm Rahul Mehrotra Associates. He is actively involved with Urban Conservation projects in the city of Bombay and has served from 1992 to 1999 on the Advisory Committee to the Municipal Commissioner on the Conservation of Heritage Buildings and artifacts in the city of Bombay. He has taught at The National Singapore University and the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he is now an associate professor.
