He worked in Los Angeles and London between 1989 and 1995, when he returned to India to found Studio Mumbai, a human infrastructure of skilled craftsmen and architects who design and build the work directly, sharing an environment created from an iterative process, where ideas are explored through the production of large-scale mock-ups, models, material studies, sketches and drawings.
Bijoy Jain has taught in several universities, among which the Yale School of Architecture (where he has been, in Spring 2013, Norman R. Foster Professor of Architectural Design) and the Accademia di architettura, Università della Svizzera italiana.
The work of Studio Mumbai has been presented at the XII, XIII and XV Venice Biennale, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and in several other exhibitions. Among the prize he won, Bijoy Jain received in 2012 the BSI Swiss Architectural Award.
