Born in Xinjiang in 1963. He graduated in 1985 at the Nanjing Institute of Technology, in 2000 received Ph.D. from the Tongji University of Shanghai. In 1997 he founded with his wife Lu Wenyu the Amateur Architecture Studio, based in Hangzhou. He is professor and Head of the department of Architecture at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, and in 2011 he became the first Chinese Kenzo Tange Visiting Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Mass. He was selected in 2008 for the first edition of the BSI Swiss Architectural Award. In 2011 he received the Gold Medal of Architecture from the Académie d’Architecture de France and in 2012 the Pritzker Prize.
